Anthropic's Daily Merges Soar Past 30,000, Forcing a Homegrown Git Replacement

Anthropic revealed in an engineering blog post that, with Claude autonomously writing code at scale, daily merges in its internal monorepo surged from roughly 2,500 in May 2026 to over 30,000 by September—a roughly 12x increase in four months, with a single-day record of 30,401 merges on September 9. Git, designed for humans, had become the biggest bottleneck, so the team spent about five months building an in-house version control system called Scion (CLI: scn) to replace it.
