Anthropic's daily merges soared 2,500 to 30,000+, prompting custom Scion SCM

GitLab details how Anthropic's monorepo daily merges grew from 2,500 in May to 30,000+ by September, leading Anthropic to build Scion, a purpose-built source control system for agent-scale development on giant monorepos where nearly all clients are always-online agents. Scion isn't a general Git replacement and needs its own code review, search, and CI. GitLab is using this to push its next-gen SCM announced at Transcend in June (with Anthropic's source control team on stage), targeting enterprises that need governed, cloud or air-gapped agent-scale Git without migrating existing CI and compliance workflows.
