Anthropic ditches Git for in-house Scion VCS as agent merges hit 30,000/day
SumitGup · x · 2026-10-14
Anthropic's engineering blog details how AI agents blew up its developer infrastructure: daily code merges jumped from 2,500 in May to over 30,000 in September, bottlenecking tooling built for human-scale work. In five months the team built Scion, a new version control system, and fully migrated its monorepo off Git.
Key design shift: Git assumes offline clients holding full repo copies, while Scion's clients are almost entirely agents and jobs, so it's built around an always-reachable server with on-demand data fetching. Commentators argue Git's design is archaic at agent scale and large companies will move on from it.
