Anthropic ditches git for in-house Scion as daily merges explode 12x to 30,000

Anthropic migrated its monorepo off git to an in-house VCS called Scion in five months, as AI-accelerated development broke scale limits: daily merges jumped from 2,500 in May 2026 to over 30,000 by September, main-branch history alone hit nearly 100 GB, and CI ran roughly 25 million checkouts per day. A telling example of engineering infrastructure having to be rebuilt for AI-speed code output.
