Anthropic Built Its Own Version Control System as Daily Merges Hit 30,000

Anthropic's engineering blog details how Claude-driven coding turned developer infrastructure into the bottleneck, prompting the company to build an in-house version control system.
- In May 2026, Anthropic averaged about 2,500 code changes merged per day; by September that figure exceeded 30,000 per day, a more than tenfold increase the team does not expect to slow.
- Coding is no longer the bottleneck: Claude autonomously iterates on research loops, micro-optimizes complex programs, and builds new services from scratch, so source control, builds, and CI—built for human scale—became the constraint.
- To keep up, Anthropic built Scion, an in-house version control system, and fully migrated its monorepo off git in five months.
- In the same period it shipped a code review surface called Antique, code search, a rich source control IAM system, and novel ways to manage and land large volumes of reviewed code.
- The post frames this as a case study: Claude's coding ability both created the problem and enabled the fast build of a high-quality, scalable fix.
