Anthropic dropped git for its own source control Scion after merges grew 10x

Anthropic published an engineering blog on migrating its entire monorepo from git to Scion, an in-house version control system, in five months.
- Context: Anthropic averaged 2,500 merges/day in May 2026, growing past 30,000/day by September. With Claude writing code autonomously, the bottleneck shifted from coding to human-scale infrastructure: source control, builds, and CI.
- Alongside Scion, the team shipped a code review surface (Antique), code search, a source-control IAM system, and novel workflows for landing large volumes of reviewed code.
- Notable loop: Claude's output both created the scaling problem and enabled building the replacement system quickly. The post notes latent demand for merging is effectively infinite — every bottleneck removed immediately drives more code production.
