Anthropic Merges Claude Cowork and Chat into One Unified Claude
On September 17, Anthropic officially announced merging Claude Cowork and regular chat into one unified Claude: users no longer need to decide "where a task should go" — in the same conversation they can casually ask a question, then directly hand off a report or large task, retaining existing context, skills, and connectors. According to engineer Felix Rieseberg, the merged product philosophy is "fewer choices," motivated by user feedback — what annoyed people most was deciding where tasks go, and Cowork and chat contexts didn't interoperate. The new Claude works on tasks autonomously, asks when something is unclear, and leaves final decisions to the user.
Confirmed
- With the laptop closed, tasks keep running in the cloud; when opened, Claude can directly use local files and apps.
- Claude Docs, Slides, and Design are folded into the conversation: draft a one-pager in Docs, turn it into slides with Slides, create design mockups with Design, and export directly to PowerPoint and other common formats.
- Human collaboration is supported: users can edit a line in a document, leave comments for Claude on slides, select and move elements directly, share with one click, and present straight from Claude.
- Anthropic published an official blog post detailing the merge; the feature is rolling out to Pro and Max users, and Felix Rieseberg said the merged Claude will ship within weeks, with engineering safeguards added for reliability.
Why it matters
- It eliminates the split between Cowork and chat — shared context shifts users from "picking a tool" to "assigning tasks directly in conversation," a unifying redesign of the product.
- Slides, documents, and designs are generated within the conversation, can be fine-tuned by hand, and exported to mainstream formats, moving Claude from a pure chat assistant toward an office platform that delivers complete work products.
