Anthropic Merges Claude Cowork and Chat into One Unified Claude

On September 17, Anthropic officially announced merging Claude Cowork and regular chat into one unified Claude: users no longer need to decide "where a task should go" — in the same conversation they can casually ask a question, then directly hand off a report or large task, retaining existing context, skills, and connectors. According to engineer Felix Rieseberg, the merged product philosophy is "fewer choices," motivated by user feedback — what annoyed people most was deciding where tasks go, and Cowork and chat contexts didn't interoperate. The new Claude works on tasks autonomously, asks when something is unclear, and leaves final decisions to the user.
