DeepMind launches AlphaGenome Atlas covering 9 billion DNA variants
Google DeepMind released AlphaGenome Atlas on September 8, using the AlphaGenome model to pre-compute the molecular effects of all roughly 9 billion single-base (single-nucleotide) variants in the human genome. The results are organized into a searchable, open database, freely available to the global scientific community.
Confirmed
- The dataset spans 1 PB, which DeepMind says is over 30 times larger than the AlphaFold database
- It covers every possible single-letter DNA mutation, making it the most comprehensive catalog to date of gene mutations and their molecular-biological effects
- Researchers can query the predicted impact of any single-base variant directly on the website
- The core feature is the AlphaGenome Variant Impact (AVI) score, which ranks all 9 billion mutations by severity of harm and directly links each variant to the molecular mechanism it disrupts, along with an explanation
- Freely available to academic researchers worldwide
Why it matters
- The significance of the vast majority of possible genomic variants was previously unknown; the Atlas turns variant-effect lookup from one-by-one experimental validation into pre-computed, on-demand queries, which could accelerate the identification of disease-causing mutations and genetic-disease research
- The AVI score not only ranks harmfulness but also explains the underlying molecular mechanisms, giving researchers interpretable evidence rather than a black-box score
