NVIDIA Forms Open Secure AI Alliance to Champion Open Weights
NVIDIA has spearheaded the formation of the Open Secure AI Alliance with approximately 35 industry giants, including Microsoft, Meta, and OpenAI, signing an open letter titled "Open Weights and American AI Leadership" to support open-weight models. Jensen Huang emphasized that defenders need a frontier AI ecosystem combining both open and closed sources, viewing open models as defensive assets rather than burdens.
Confirmed
NVIDIA announced it will open its models, weights, data, and research to the alliance, including the open-source NOOA (NVIDIA Labs Object-Oriented Agents) framework. Signatories span various sectors including models, cloud, chips, and security, featuring companies like Google, AMD, IBM, GitHub, Hugging Face, CrowdStrike, Palantir, Perplexity, Mistral, Sakana AI, SpaceXAI, Cisco, Cloudflare, and Red Hat.
The open letter proposes several core recommendations: expanding compute access for startups and researchers, investing in shared training assets, avoiding premature restrictions on open models, and preventing innovation offshoring. It argues that closed models aren't inherently safe and that open weights promote industry-wide competition.
Huang cited the Hugging Face incident, claiming closed-source AI hindered critical forensics while an open-weight frontier model helped control the breach. Hugging Face officially stated it joined the alliance because AI safety improves through inter-organizational sharing of research and real-world experience.
Unconfirmed
The list of signatories continues to grow, but notable AI companies and executives (such as Anthropic, Elon Musk, Andy Jassy, and Dario Amodei) have not yet signed.
Why it matters
This move signals that tech giants led by NVIDIA are actively building a united front for open-source AI through alliances and policy advocacy. They aim to shape open models as the cornerstone of cybersecurity and innovation at the regulatory level, preventing absolute monopolies by a few closed-source providers, which will profoundly impact global AI regulatory policies and the industrial landscape.
