A rare cross-company open letter backs open weights and U.S. AI leadership
The post points to a signed letter from a wide coalition spanning NVIDIA, OpenAI, Meta, Microsoft, Cohere, Hugging Face, GitHub, IBM, Perplexity, Mistral, Palantir, CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks and others. Jensen Huang’s first tweet is framed around a call for open weights and stronger U.S. AI leadership.
The letter argues that open weights should be part of the U.S. AI strategy because they:
- expand access for startups, enterprises, universities and public institutions;
- increase competition across model developers, cloud, chips, applications and services;
- reduce lock-in and let organizations adapt models to their own needs;
- improve safety by giving defenders comparable capabilities to detect and respond to threats.
It also explicitly addresses risks: once weights are released, they are hard to control or trace if modified. But the letter says the answer is not to ban open weights. Instead, policymakers should expand compute access, invest in shared training assets such as datasets and evaluation frameworks, and avoid premature restrictions that could push innovation overseas.
A key point is the distinction between distillation as a legitimate technique and unlawful extraction of value from closed models. The authors say targeted legal and commercial remedies are the right response to abuse, not blanket restrictions on an important innovation technique.
