JHU/MIT OpenTac: Open-Source Customizable Tactile Skin for Any Robot Surface

On October 22, Johns Hopkins University, MIT CSAIL, and other institutions jointly released OpenTac, an open-source ecosystem for custom tactile skin. It supports automatically designing, fabricating, and deploying high-density tactile skin on arbitrary robot surfaces; beyond measuring normal pressure, it can also estimate shear forces tangential to the sensor surface, and supports readout, simulation, and data sharing across different sensors. Current takeaway: the project is released open-source so the community can customize tactile sensing for different robots, and what makes it notable is turning tactile skin from a single-lab design into a reusable open ecosystem.
