Google Cloud ships new docs explaining GPUs vs TPUs, from CUDA cores to use cases
rseroter · x · 2026-10-17
Google Cloud's tech docs team published two new explainer pages on GPUs and TPUs for people who feel it's too late to ask the basics.
- The GPU doc breaks down CUDA cores (general-purpose SIMT vector units) vs Tensor Cores (specialized matrix-multiply-accumulate units) and how GPUs differ architecturally from CPUs
- Covers available GPU models on Google Cloud, machine series mappings, performance characteristics, ideal use cases (AI/ML training, HPC, rendering, transcoding) and pricing considerations
- A separate page explains TPUs and how they differ
