Veteran Engineer on Self-Teaching Deep Learning via Andrew Ng and fast.ai Courses
intellectronica · x · 2026-10-08
Longtime software engineer Electronica recounts how he broke into deep learning nearly a decade ago with no formal AI training, despite years of engineering experience.
He credits free online education for making the transition possible: Andrew Ng's ML courses (which grew into Coursera and deeplearning.ai) and the fast.ai course by Jeremy Howard and Rachel Thomas, which he calls still the best foundational deep learning training available. Beyond coursework, he says the real key was transferring the hacker instincts from his years of hands-on engineering into AI — a slow, long, but fun path into the field.
