Ex-OpenAI researcher's "Neural Networks Are Already Clean" sparks interpretability firestorm

On October 16, the AI community erupted into a heated debate over whether interpretability has achieved a major breakthrough. Nick Cammarata, an early mechanistic interpretability researcher formerly at OpenAI, wrote that interpretability may be the most important scientific question of our time—without understanding model internals, alignment cannot be solved. He said he felt pessimistic during his early mechanistic interpretability work at OpenAI, because with the tools available then, neural networks looked like nearly arbitrary tangles; now he claims the vast majority of neurons in large models are readable, and the implied breakthrough has drawn widespread attention.
