DeepMind Unveils SL2T Sign Language to Text Model

Google DeepMind has launched a new large-scale multilingual Sign Language to Text (SL2T) model designed to serve over 70 million deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals globally. Marking the technology's first transition from the lab to consumer products, it is now integrated into the Pixel 11's Gboard keyboard and Live Translate, enabling real-time American Sign Language (ASL) to English conversion. This allows hearing-impaired users to input text simply by signing at their phones, overcoming long-standing technical hurdles in sign language AI development.
