OpenAI refines ChatGPT desktop app and Codex UI after feedback
OpenAI has rolled out a set of updates to the ChatGPT desktop app after receiving substantial feedback, with the main focus on fixing usability issues introduced by the newer design. The changes matter because they bring chat history, projects, and mode switching back into a more complete desktop-client workflow instead of a lighter quick-entry experience.
Key changes
According to posts summarizing the update, the sidebar now shows previous conversations and cloud Projects directly. Chat and Work histories now sync across web, mobile, and desktop, while local tasks remain stored only on the computer. Chat mode is also no longer limited to Quick Chat and now appears alongside Work mode.
For Codex, @op7418 said the interaction became easier to use after an overnight update. The top-left switch changed from Work / Codex to ChatGPT / Codex, and historical conversations were merged into the left-side Recent Chats area, where users can filter between regular chats and other threads.
Reactions and follow-up tweaks
@markk described the app as having its "full experience" back, saying users can now switch directly between ChatGPT and Codex inside the app. That was framed as a meaningful improvement over the earlier, more limited presentation.
At the same time, some users felt the first Mac update made chat feel less central as Codex and Work became more prominent. A day later, @DrZakarySmith reported another macOS UI change: Codex had been moved into a separate dropdown, and the default view returned to a more conventional chat interface. He viewed that as a response to prior feedback.
Unconfirmed capability note
@flowersslop raised the possibility that Codex inside the desktop app may now be able to run simulations directly in-app. The post presents this as an observation/question rather than a confirmed official capability, but it suggests OpenAI may be expanding what desktop-side Codex workflows can do.
