Epoch AI: Nvidia's fabless design value leaves a 0.3pp hole in US GDP stats
Jsevillamol · x · 2026-10-30
An Epoch AI report finds US GDP growth has been understated by 0.3 percentage points because GDP statistics miss most of the value fabless chipmakers — primarily Nvidia — create by designing chips manufactured and sold abroad. Key points:
- US investment in computing equipment has hit $400B/year, nearly triple 2023 levels, yet measured GDP impact stays modest; this quarter it even flipped negative as import growth outstripped investment growth.
- No goods export is recorded (chips are made overseas) and no IP export is recorded (foreign buyers don't pay for the IP explicitly), so Nvidia's design value appears in none of the categories — confirmed with the Bureau of Economic Analysis.
- If Nvidia keeps growing at its current pace, the gap could widen to nearly 2 percentage points of annual GDP growth by 2028. The blind spot isn't new and applies to other factoryless manufacturers.
