EMNLP paper: rubric text alone can predict LLM-as-a-Judge scores
ravi_iitm · x · 2026-10-28
An EMNLP 2026 paper (arXiv:2609.02942) questions the reliability of LLM-as-a-Judge evaluation pipelines.
- Classifiers trained only on rubric text — with no access to evaluated responses — achieve nontrivial predictive performance on judge outputs, meaning scores can be partially anticipated independently of what's being judged
- Counterfactual perturbations show judges often fail to reliably update decisions when either the candidate response or rubric criterion is reversed
- Authors call for closer methodological scrutiny of rubric-based LLM evaluation
