Google unveils Agent Compute Engine: hardware-isolated microVMs for every AI agent
gaganghotra_ · x · 2026-10-23
Google Cloud announced Agent Compute Engine (ACE), pitched as its biggest architecture invention since TPUs, built for the shift from AI that answers questions to AI that takes actions.
- Core design: every AI agent gets its own hardware-isolated microVM with container-speed startup and zero credentials held inside the sandbox.
- Motivation: agentic workloads have become one of the fastest-growing consumers of compute and storage across Google's fleet; traditional compute primitives can't run hundreds of millions of agents at planet scale with required cost and latency.
- Lineage: Google frames ACE as the fourth architecture rethink after Borg/containers, TPUs, and Titanium/IPU.
- It will power personal agents for Gemini users and be available on Google Cloud for any team building agents.
