Google Cloud Launches Agent Compute Engine, a microVM-per-Agent VM Type
At AGNTCon + MCPCon, Google Cloud announced Agent Compute Engine (ACE), a new VM type purpose-built for AI agents. Now in preview, it targets users running agents at scale, giving each agent its own hardware-isolated microVM that combines container-like startup speed with strong security isolation—while holding no credentials inside the sandbox.
Confirmed
- Timing and venue: announced October 23 at AGNTCon + MCPCon, with the product in preview (m1, m4).
- Core architecture: every AI Agent gets a dedicated hardware-isolated microVM with near-container startup speed; the sandbox is designed to hold no credentials internally (m1, m3, m4, m5).
- Design motivation: agents spend much of their time waiting on models, tools, humans, or external systems, and ACE treats that idle time as an infrastructure problem (m4).
- Internal practice: two Google distinguished engineers wrote that agentic workflows have become one of the fastest-growing sources of compute and storage demand inside Google, prompting the team to move from general AI infrastructure to tackling the company-wide explosion in agent usage (m2).
Why it matters
- A report relayed by @gaganghotra called ACE Google's most important architectural innovation since the TPU, framing "agentic AI" as a new computing paradigm—a remark reflecting how highly outsiders view its positioning.
- For users running large-scale agent workloads, ACE balances fast startup with secure isolation, and its credential-free sandbox reduces the attack surface if an agent is compromised, making it one of the first cloud compute foundations systematically tailored to agent workloads.
