Packaging a local MCP server as a one-click Claude Desktop extension: lessons learned
sarghayk · reddit · 2026-10-24
The developer of Griasa, an open-source Mac meeting recorder with a local read-only MCP server, shares a full writeup on packaging it as a .mcpb Claude Desktop extension (remote connectors can't reach localhost). Key lessons: a tiny Node stdio↔HTTP bridge that re-reads URL/token each message; shipping a static tool list so Claude Desktop degrades gracefully; readOnlyHint + structuredContent on every tool; supporting old and new protocol versions since Claude Code/Codex/Cursor still speak older ones; and a release script that builds the signed .mcpb, attaches it to GitHub Releases and publishes server.json with sha256 to the official MCP Registry. Fully local, no account, no telemetry.
