When simple rules beat AI: a frozen ride-hailing trip state shows deterministic checks win

The author paid a premium for a flight-linked ride at Dulles, then watched the app freeze: unreachable driver, no escalation path to a human, and hours later the app still claimed the driver was '9 minutes away' while dispatching new drivers to a nonexistent trip. His point: no LLM or agent is needed — just deterministic rules (reassign on stalled ETA, release on no response, close trip on geofence exit plus hard timeout, always-visible working cancel). A state machine that can't get stuck beats AI here.
