Oracle engineer breaks down agent memory: context windows aren't memory, use a database

Agents need a real memory layer
Anders Swanson, developer evangelist for Oracle Database, argues at the AI Engineer World's Fair that agents reread the same files every session because nothing they learned is saved. Context windows aren't memory, bigger windows aren't the fix, and markdown scratch pads plus grep don't scale — keep going and you'll end up building your own database.
The converging pattern
Modern memory systems converge on a loop of formation, recall, evolution and evaluation, plus governance:
- Typed memories: episodic, semantic, procedural and working state
- A storage schema with vectors, text indexes, graph links, time and audit history
- Redact before anything is written
- Hybrid search blending several retrieval methods for recall
Failure modes and feedback
Memories can be stale, mis-scoped, poisoned or conflicting, and feedback is what closes the loop.
The talk also introduces the Oracle Agent Memory Python SDK (on PyPI), along with docs and the Oracle AI Developer Hub.
