Anthropic Launches Wet Lab as Claude Uncovers CRISPR-Like Enzyme System

Anthropic announced a new life sciences research group and in-house wet lab that uses Claude for fundamental biology: scanning DNA datasets for uncharacterized protein families, generating hypotheses at scale, and testing them experimentally.
Early result: with only high-level direction, Claude discovered a novel enzyme system in bacteriophage DNA, marked by a long array of CRISPR-like DNA repeats beside the enzyme's gene. The post frames this in the lineage of restriction enzymes, Taq polymerase, and CRISPR — oddities that became industries — while stressing the system's function and any therapeutic potential remain unknown and will require much more work.
