Ai2 Partners with Google on NeuralGCM+ for Faster Climate Prediction
The Allen Institute (Ai2) announced a partnership with Google to develop NeuralGCM+, backed by a multi-million-dollar, three-year grant from Google.org and technical support from Google Research, with the team set to expand. The project builds on NeuralGCM, released in 2024, which simulates large-scale atmospheric dynamics with physics while handling processes like clouds with AI; Google Research previously used it for week-to-month-scale forecasting, whereas NeuralGCM+ targets climate prediction on yearly-to-decadal scales.
Confirmed
- NeuralGCM+ will couple the atmospheric model with an ocean model (plus sea ice) to capture ocean heat uptake, add physical processes, and test warmer climate scenarios
- Ai2's existing climate simulation accelerator, ACE (Ai2 Climate Emulator), is said to dramatically speed up climate simulation
- The project plans to release models, frameworks, and documented workflows while improving related components, going fully open source
- Official use-case example: forecasting changes in rainfall and water availability in regions like the US Southwest through mid-century
Why it matters
- Ocean-atmosphere-sea ice coupling is a key challenge in climate prediction; extending NeuralGCM from weather-forecast scales to decadal climate scales marks a significant AI-for-Science advance in the climate domain
- The open-source workflows mean academia and the public can reuse this climate modeling tool, supporting long-term planning research such as water resource management
