Allen Institute teams with Google on NeuralGCM+ for years-to-decades climate projections
allen_ai · x · 2026-11-05
Allen Institute (AI2) is partnering with Google Research on NeuralGCM+, building on NeuralGCM launched in 2024. NeuralGCM combines physics-based simulation of large-scale atmospheric dynamics with AI for cloud formation and rainfall; it can reproduce historical climate, but reliable projections of a warmer future remain an open challenge.
Backed by multimillion-dollar, 3-year funding and Google Research support, the new effort shifts from weeks-to-months forecasting to years-to-decades projections, coupling atmosphere and ocean models to capture how oceans absorb and redistribute heat. The team will expand and plans to open-source models and workflows.
