Google's Agent Compute Engine suspends idle agent VMs, targeting sub-500ms resume
krishnan · x · 2026-10-24
Google Cloud announced Agent Compute Engine (heading to preview), which treats agents' idle time — waiting on models, tools, humans, or external systems — as an infrastructure problem rather than an unavoidable tax.
The core mechanism: give each agent an isolated microVM, pause it during thinking/waiting phases, share a base image across agents via copy-on-write memory, restore state with checkpoint/restore, and inject credentials outside the sandbox. Google reports its open Agent Substrate sustained 500 activations/second across a 200,000-agent validation run with suspend/resume latency under 500ms — vendor benchmarks, so treat accordingly.
