Microsoft Launches Microsoft-Decision-1, a Decision Model Beating LLMs on Latency and Quality
Microsoft CEO Nadella announced the new decision model Microsoft-Decision-1 on October 10, now available on the Foundry platform. Positioned as a new "decision scoring model" category: unlike LLMs that generate text or reason, it's purpose-built for structured decision tasks, directly outputs structured results software can execute immediately, runs at extremely low cost, and is officially claimed to beat LLMs and other decision models on both latency and quality. What makes this release notable is that it tries to carve "decisions" out of the generative paradigm into a new model category.
Confirmed
- The model was announced by Nadella himself, with a detailed Microsoft official blog post published alongside, and it's live on Foundry.
- According to testingcatalog, the model was post-trained from Qwen3.5-9B, uses single forward-pass inference, and blind testing covered 36 benchmarks with nearly 150,000 comparisons.
- Microsoft has internally tested the model in scenarios like incident response, quality control, and scientific discovery.
- Officials say its output can be executed directly by software, it beats LLMs and other decision models on both latency and quality, and costs very little.
Why it matters
- If the "decision scoring" category holds up, high-frequency, low-latency structured decision scenarios (risk control, scheduling, incident response) may shift from calling large LLMs to specialized decision models, cutting cost and latency significantly.
- The Qwen3.5-9B post-training route also shows that mid-sized models with targeted post-training can challenge much larger models on specific tasks.
- Performance claims so far come mainly from official and blind-test data; independent third-party evaluations are yet to appear.
