Google quietly launches Nano Banana 2.1 with 4K output and major price cuts

Google has quietly launched its new image generation model Nano Banana 2.1 with no official announcement or launch event. It is now being gradually rolled out to users, with the scale of capability improvements and coverage yet to be officially explained.

Confirmed

• Google quietly launched Nano Banana 2.1 with zero buildup—no launch event and no advance hype—and users can already try it.
• The model is a new version of the Gemini-series image generation/editing model and is being rolled out progressively.

Not yet confirmed

• The tipster account testingcatalog found that Nano Banana 2.1 appears to be available on Google Flow, but its outputs closely resemble Nano Banana Pro, so it's unclear whether requests are actually being routed to the new model.
• Tipster lyraxana claims the model's internal codename on Google Flow is beluga, which has not been officially confirmed.

Why it matters

• Blogger Angaisb expressed disappointment at the update, saying they have zero interest in yet another non-Pro-tier image model and that Google "can do better"—suggesting the real headline release may be a subsequent Pro version, and that the market still expects higher-tier image models.
