ETH Zurich's Anthropomorphic Hand Walks on Its Fingers via Reinforcement Learning

ETH Zurich presented 'Fingers as Legs': the anthropomorphic five-fingered Wuji Hand uses its fingers as legs—no wheels, bolt-on legs, or separate actuators—to locomote, support its own weight, and grasp, with multiple authors calling it a real-life 'Thing' from The Addams Family. @lukasmziegler notes it breaks the quadruped paradigm—quadruped legs are symmetrically placed, whereas five anthropomorphic fingers are not, yet the hand learns a self-supporting gait.

Why it matters

Unifying grasping and locomotion on one actuator set eliminates arms or wheeled bases, pointing toward compact, low-cost mobile manipulation hardware and demonstrating RL's generalization to atypical morphologies.
