ETH Zurich Teaches Robotic Hand to Walk on Its Fingers

An ETH Zurich team has presented research called "Fingers as Legs": an anthropomorphic five-fingered robotic hand, the Wuji Hand, uses its fingers as legs, achieving both locomotion and grasping with the same set of fingers—no wheels, bolted-on legs, or separate actuators. Multiple authors likened it to a real-life "Thing" from The Addams Family.

The research comes from ETH Zurich; the hand is the Wuji Hand, the approach is dubbed "Fingers as Legs," and the paper is on arXiv under the title "Fingers as Legs: Learning Self-Supported Locomotion and Manipulation with an Anthropomorphic Hand."
Locomotion is achieved via a reinforcement learning policy coordinating the five fingers, paired with onboard sensing and control, enabling adaptive movement in real-world environments; demo videos show it crawling over gravel, grass, and stone-paved paths, and even playing golf and games.
The core idea breaks the traditional division of labor: usually a robot arm delivers the "hand" to the workstation, whereas this work gives the hand itself the ability to move—traveling to the workstation on its own and then performing tasks with the same fingers.
@lukasmziegler noted the design breaks the quadruped paradigm: quadrupeds have legs evenly distributed around the body, while an anthropomorphic five-finger hand does not, yet it can still learn self-supported gaits and carry the body's weight.

Why it matters

Unifying grasping and locomotion on the same set of actuators eliminates the need for a robot arm or wheeled chassis, opening a new path toward compact, low-cost mobile manipulation hardware and demonstrating reinforcement learning's ability to generalize to locomotion control for atypical morphologies.
