ETH Zürich robotic hand walks on its own fingers, no legs or wheels needed

ETH Zürich has built a robotic hand that walks across a surface using its own fingers — no wheels, no bolted-on legs, no separate drive mechanism. The same fingers that grasp also carry the hand's weight, evoking the Thing from the Addams Family.

Key technical insight: quadruped locomotion reward functions quietly assume symmetric legs evenly spaced around a body, but a hand has fingers of unequal length unevenly arranged around a palm plus a mismatched thumb. The team wrote a reward formulation for that unequal geometry, and in simulation it moves faster than tuned rewards borrowed from quadruped work.

Notably, they kept the hand's existing finger design and position controller — not a bespoke demo machine — with power and computation onboard, running untethered.
