Apple Watch Series 12 Audio Intelligence: 15-second Live Rewind and Siri Recap, all on-device

Apple introduced a new Audio Intelligence feature set for Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, adding Always on Live Rewind, Siri Recap, and sound recognition to strengthen the watch's recording and assistant capabilities. All four features are optional and microphone-based, per @AnhPhuNguyen1.

Confirmed

• Live Rewind: with always-on enabled, users can rewind and transcribe the last 15 seconds of conversation, as consistently reported by @CodeblixLtd, @LinusEkenstam and @altryne; per @Polymarket, users can also ask Siri directly about what was just heard.
• Siri Recap: records surrounding audio and generates notes and highlights, conditionable by time, location, or always-on; @testingcatalog and @altryne liken it to a watch version of the AI note app granola.
• Privacy and architecture: Apple emphasizes end-to-end private encryption with transcription fully on-device and no cloud dependency; @CodeblixLtd notes the raw audio is discarded immediately.
• The features rely on the on-device compute of the new S11 chip (per @LinusEkenstam).

Why it matters

• This is another step in Apple's on-device AI assistant push: compressing the full record-transcribe-summarize pipeline onto the watch and connecting it to Siri Q&A, differentiating from cloud-based AI note apps like granola.
• The 15-second rewind targets the common "missed what was just said" scenario; the always-on audio buffer also reflects advances in on-device memory and compute—actual experience and battery impact remain to be seen.
