NYC Public Schools Ban Generative AI for Grades 2-K Through 8 for One Year

Starting with the 2026-2027 school year (taking effect when school opens next week), New York City public schools will ban AI use by students from pre-K (2-K) through eighth grade as well as by teachers, who also may not use AI to grade assignments. According to official briefing slides and multiple media reports, the new policy bans generative AI use in school by 2-K through eighth-grade students, and teachers using AI to grade student work is likewise prohibited.
ABC News reported the ban covers more than 500,000 students and teachers, effective from the 2026-2027 school year, taking effect when school opens next week.
Per The Guardian, New York City is the largest school district in the US with about 900,000 students enrolled annually; students below third grade (around ages 9-10) are also restricted from using laptops and tablets.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he will spend a year "studying the impact of this technology."
