ABC News confirms NYC public schools will ban AI for over 500,000 students from 2-K through 8th grade starting the 2026-2027 school year — the most expansive AI moratorium in the nation. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the city will spend a year "studying the impacts of this technology." High schoolers are exempt and will get twice-yearly AI literacy classes; companion chatbots and student-facing AI software are banned.
