NYC Bans Generative AI for 600,000 Public School Students in First Citywide Policy

New York City has announced its first citywide public school AI policy: a one-year moratorium on generative AI for students in 2K through 8th grade starting September 10, 2026, affecting nearly 600,000 students in the nation's largest school district. Teachers are also barred from using AI for grading or critical judgments about student performance.
Additional limits include a 30-minute daily screen time cap for grades 3-5 and 45 minutes for grades 6-8. A controlled pilot allows up to 50,000 high school students limited AI access if they complete AI literacy courses twice a year. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said children need teachers and human connection to learn, rejecting claims that AI in early education is inevitable.
