Runway Unveils Solaris, Its First Interface World Model

On September 1, Runway released Solaris, its first "Interface World Model," along with an official intro video. Described as a new kind of operating system, Solaris generates interactive interfaces frame by frame in real time without any code (including HTML/CSS), marking a new product and research direction beyond video generation.

Confirmed

• Solaris uses direct rendering: the model generates every frame of the UI directly, with no intermediate code, and the interface evolves in real time in response to clicks and drags. Per @机器之心 and @新智元, it is built on the Gen-4.5 video model and continues the GWM-1 world model lineage, conditioning next-frame autoregressive generation on user input so the picture itself becomes the software
• @op7418 demonstrated concrete interactions: dragging a tree makes it larger, moving paintings and light sources re-renders lighting, and clicks trigger pop-up content
• Per the technical report, Solaris outperforms frontier LLMs on structural similarity and information retention for UI generation; @新智元 notes it beat Claude's interface generation in blind tests
• Runway (@runwayml) and community authors (e.g., @mattshumer) confirmed the positioning and capabilities
• @msg frames Solaris as a "generate, don't code" interface framework, arguing video becomes the universal interface and enabling agent training in more dynamic environments, with future UI interactions shaped as chat/gesture in, chat/video out

Why it matters

• The "Interface World Model" is a new concept: if interfaces can be generated in real time, software development may shift from writing code to describing intent, bypassing the designer-to-engineer translation pipeline and potentially disrupting traditional UI development and OS form factors
• @markk notes it echoes Elon Musk's prediction that future AI models will generate screen pixels directly rather than run traditional software
• It extends Runway's video/world-model capabilities into interactive interfaces; its technical report and productization progress warrant continued attention
