200+ Scholars and 16 Nobel Laureates Urge Action on AI Economic Shock
Led by the Stanford Digital Economy Lab, a statement titled "We Must Act Now: A Statement on AI’s Transformation of the Economy" warns that AI could become "extremely powerful" within the next decade. The statement argues that the economic impact of AI could surpass the Industrial Revolution but occur much faster. It has been co-signed by over 200 economists and AI researchers, including 16 Nobel laureates, urging immediate preparation from governments and society.
Core Judgments and Policy Appeals
The statement emphasizes that AI capabilities are advancing much faster than the understanding of its economic effects. Tom Doerr notes that past technologies like the steam engine left decades for societal adaptation, but AI might only allow a few years. Erik Brynjolfsson adds that policymakers must go beyond merely "guiding AI development" and implement responses proportional to this generational structural shock. Furthermore, economists suggest that AI surpassing human performance in almost all non-physical tasks within a decade is a significant possibility, warranting a response on the scale of WWII or the COVID-19 pandemic.
Signatories' Responses and Interpretations
Daron Acemoglu mentioned that he helped revise the text, making it a consensus stance for researchers across multiple disciplines. Anders Sandberg, who also signed, pointed out that while people overestimate the hype of "AI research" itself, they severely underestimate the lack of "AI economics" research. He clarified that the statement is not about doomsday scenarios, but a reminder to face an impending techno-economic transition that could arrive much faster than expected.
