Acemoglu on AI and Economic Shocks

Daron Acemoglu explains why he signed the recent AI statement: he participated in revising the text and believes the revised version better reflects the consensus of AI researchers, economists, and social scientists.
He agrees with most of the statement's assessments: AI will likely become much more powerful over the next 10 years, potentially bringing economic shifts on the scale of the Industrial Revolution. Corresponding risks include massive job displacement, alongside the potential for significant improvements in living standards.
He also emphasizes that AI's impact extends beyond the labor market to human cognition, from K-12 education to frontier science. Therefore, economists, policymakers, and tech leaders need to quickly understand the economics of "transformative AI" and build appropriate incentives, guardrails, and institutions.
