Hollywood flipped on GenAI: Weta FX chief says studios now shun vendors without an AI strategy
DavidmComfort · x · 2026-11-07
Daniel Seah, CEO of Weta FX (VFX house behind Avatar and Lord of the Rings), said Hollywood's stance on generative AI reversed within a year: in early 2025 the Big Four studios' legal teams banned any GenAI use in their work; by mid-year several clients allowed it with pre-approval; now studios actively avoid VFX vendors lacking an AI strategy — "If you don't have an AI strategy, don't bother." He spoke in Taipei after Weta signed a partnership with Taiwan's TAICCA at TCCF.
