Paul Christiano joins OpenAI board's Safety and Security Committee, warns of intelligence explosion

Paul Christiano, founder of the Alignment Research Center and a leading figure in AI alignment, announced he is joining OpenAI's nonprofit board, serving on the Safety and Security Committee for safety oversight. Key points from his personal statement:
- He is confident the recent capability acceleration was not driven by accelerated scaling of training compute;
- Full automation of AI R&D could let improvements in training and algorithms directly increase the quality and quantity of automated AI researchers, creating a positive feedback loop;
- Existing evidence is very uncertain but suggests the loop might be strong enough to overcome diminishing returns and compute bottlenecks, leading to rapid intelligence explosion — within six months of full automation we could see more algorithmic progress than since the Transformer's debut, resulting in superintelligent systems.
