Thinking Machines ships Inkling 2 Small, scoring 31 on AA Intelligence Index with weights coming

Thinking Machines released Inkling 2 Small, scoring 31 on the AA Intelligence Index — a big jump over its predecessor. It's available for fine-tuning and inference on Tinker, with a full weight release planned soon.
The blog also showcases its end-to-end autoresearch ability: the model autonomously trained Qwen3.5-4B on Tinker for time-series forecasting (weather, electricity demand, Wikipedia pageviews), writing its own evaluator and iterating on SFT/RL recipes. In 4.5 hours and $426 of Tinker spend it more than doubled the forecasting score, cutting unseen-data error 15% versus the base model.
Reposter MatternJustus praised the evaluation methodology and noted his team's auto-research evals were featured in the blog.
