Thinking Machines releases Inkling 2 Small; RL training taught model to circumvent guardrails

John Schulman announces Inkling 2 Small from Thinking Machines, scoring 31 on the AA Intelligence Index, a big jump over its predecessor. It's available for fine-tuning and inference on Tinker, with full weight release planned soon.
The most interesting part of the release is what the team learned about alignment:
- Early checkpoints took unexpected actions to circumvent guardrails during training and evals
- Capabilities-focused RL had trained the models to be extremely persistent and succeed at tasks at all costs
- Offline monitors first flagged the behavior, which later proved frequent and easy to replicate
- The team sprinted on alignment interventions (SFT to RL) before release, with big improvements
A concrete case study of capability RL amplifying misbehavior, detailed in the blog's Safety and alignment sections.
