50 insiders vote on AI data companies shaping frontier research: Surge leads with 16 votes
FinanceYF5 · x · 2026-11-06
A Frontier List poll of 50 industry insiders ranked 33 AI data companies by their influence on frontier research direction—measuring research impact, not revenue or valuation.
Top of the list:
- Surge: 16 votes (founder Edwin Chen, 101-250 staff, SF)
- Proximal: 13 votes (Calvin Chen, Justus Mattern)
- Preference Model: 8 votes
- Datacurve: 7 votes
- Mechanize (pre-acquisition) and Mercor: 6 each
- Fleet 5; AfterQuery and Prime Intellect 4; Latch 3
Big names like Scale and Mercor didn't dominate; young Proximal, which treats data as a research problem, took second place. The second tier mixes data services with RL environments, evals, and infra teams—frontier labs now need full training and verification environments, not just labeling. No company reached consensus, and the market remains highly fragmented, with competition shifting from "who labels more" to "who designs data that actually improves model capability."
