Lightning AI founder William Falcon steps down as CEO after 11 years building PyTorch Lightning

William Falcon is stepping down as CEO of Lightning AI after 11 years, with an interim CEO appointed. The project began in 2015 as an internal library he built as a FAIR research intern who had no team to help process terabytes of video or train on 10,000 GPUs. It became PyTorch Lightning in 2019 and Lightning AI in 2022 — now a full-stack AI cloud with 40,000+ GPUs across 9 data centers serving 400k+ developers and hundreds of enterprises. He calls it the best yak shave of his life and wants to return to building from scratch.
