Jeff Dean calls infinite AI self-improvement an "illusion": the loop can't run infinitely fast
sebkrier · x · 2026-11-05
Google's former chief scientist Jeff Dean, speaking with Fei-Fei Li at Stanford, pushed back on the idea that AI improving AI leads to an intelligence explosion: "some people have this illusion that you're going to be able to run this loop infinitely fast" — "I just find that kind of implausible."
The reposter adds that limits do exist but turned out much further away than expected a year or two ago, which is why people now assume there are none at all — underestimating AI is painful, so overestimating feels like the safer bet.
