Modal hits $1BN ARR as 20VC predicts 3-4 specialised inference providers worth $300-500BN

In a 20VC interview, Harry Stebbings argues inference demand is "infinite" and larger than anyone comprehends, and that 3-4 specialised inference providers worth $300-500BN will emerge; neo-clouds will struggle to enter. Modal founder Erik Bernhardsson explains why selling tokens alone is a race to the bottom with no switching cost — providers must bundle post-training, sandboxes, agentic features, low-latency and batch inference into a hard-to-copy tool suite. He claims Modal has hit $1BN in ARR, with $300M from sandbox revenue alone.
