How 2010 SMS pricing decided whether the world uses iMessage or WhatsApp

A single pricing quirk from 2010 explains today's messaging map.
- US: texting was effectively free via $20/month unlimited plans, so Americans had no reason to install anything else; with iPhone at 60% US market share, iMessage slid into an existing habit.
- Everywhere else: per-message billing made international SMS costly. WhatsApp rode data networks (free first year, then $1) and shipped early on BlackBerry (Jan 2010) and Symbian, letting it win price-sensitive markets like India and Brazil.
