Why the pinky's position matters for robot dexterity: thumb as fulcrum
chris_j_paxton · x · 2026-11-01
A thought experiment on robot dexterity: which finger would you sacrifice? The index finger's function can be partly replaced by the middle finger — but the insightful point is the geometric importance of the pinky's location.
The opposable thumb works as a fulcrum for in-hand manipulation; the pinky's natural distance from the thumb creates a longer lever arm and greater mechanical advantage, generating higher torque with the same force over a longer distance — directly relevant to robotic hand design.
