Waymo taps Toyota to build bZ4X robotaxis in-house, halving per-car cost
binarybits · x · 2026-10-31
Waymo announced a manufacturing partnership with Toyota: an autonomous Toyota bZ4X fleet will begin testing in Japan in 2027, then expand to the UK and other markets. At $37,000 retail, the bZ4X costs about half of the Jaguar I-Pace that has anchored Waymo's fleet.
Per Understanding Robots, the key line is that manufacturing happens "under one roof" — base vehicle assembly plus AV hardware integration. Previously Waymo shipped I-Paces to Magna for upfitting, estimated at $50k per car, pushing total cost to $150k ($70k base + $30k sensors + $50k upfitting). A companion chart shows Tesla's Texas robotaxi registrations surging from 50 in June to over 1,000 by October 2026, with Cybercab overtaking Model Y.
