Map tracks data centers building their own gas plants, four near Dallas ozone zone
AINowInstitute · x · 2026-10-29
Earthjustice and the Better Data Center Project published an interactive map of "Bring Your Own Power" gas plants that data center developers are building across the US to meet staggering power demand, accompanying their October 2026 report "The AI Gas Rush."
The map shows each project's generation equipment and potential emissions, overlaid with FracTracker's data center database, gas basins, pipelines, and regions in "maintenance" or "non-attainment" of air quality standards — where permitting is slower and mitigation stricter. Developers often site just outside those zones: four projects (Maypearl Generation Plant, NRG Prairie Energy Center, Hedgehog Power Generation, Pacifico Spunky Power Station) sit within a few miles of the Dallas-Fort Worth ozone non-attainment area. Data is compiled and verified from permits, news reports and public disclosures.
